Additional Notes

American actress, E.J. Peaker was known for her charming giggle. On Broadway she performed in “Barefoot in the Park and “Bye Bye Birdie,” before hitting Hollywood and performing on numerous television commercials. Director Gene Kelly originally wanted Sandy Duncan to play the role of the hat maker’s assistant Minnie Faye, but was turned down after a screen test. In later life, Peaker was known with working with the homeless by making clothing available to them.

The costumes created by costumer designer, Irene Sharaff, were a homage to classic Hollywood design and construction. Many of the costumes were designed for dancing, so they needed to “perform” and keep their shape and this was built into the costumes. This costume actually has two skirts, one meant for walking and one for dancing. Irene Sharaff was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on the film.
