Additional Notes When it was decided to dress Dorothy Lamour, The Jungle Princess, in sarongs, designer Edith Head tried to design them authentically, but, authentic sarongs often didn’t cover the breasts and this would never make it past the sensors. They were also traditionally a piece of wrapped floral printed cotton tied with several strategic knots. But, the cotton fabric didn’t drape well so with was replaced with satin crepe which did. Just knotting the fabric also didn’t work when in one early scene with the character entered a pool of water, the costume floated to the surface. So the costumes were either sewn on or (as with this costume) secured with multiple hook and eyes and snaps. The matching undershorts were devised by Head to assure there would be no accidents which could cause problems with the sensors. The style instantly effected the bathing suit industry. Even though Dorothy Lamour, who had insecurities with her body, was not fond of the costume she was forced to wear in eight of her more than fifty films, it was because of this costume she is most remembered and elevated her to the role of one of the most recognizable pin-up girls of WWII. At a time when Americans were fascinated in anything south of the border, she personified the boundless energy and essence of Latin culture. Her appearances in films were sometimes short but they always left the audiences wanting more. The Brazilian bimbo image was one that she later became to resent and tried somewhat unsuccessfully to break away from. Gwen Wakeling was the head costume designer at 20th Century Fox starting in 1933 and dressed some of the most memorable actresses at the studio, even though her costume she designed for Barbra Eden in the TV series “I Dream of Jeannie” is probably the most recognizable. Her designs for Carmen Miranda were always colorful, exposed just enough skin to pass the sensors and were designed with extremely high platform heels and over the top headpieces to compensate for the actress’s five foot frame. He had been cast opposite Lana Turner and Lombard was well aware of the reputation of both stars having affairs with their co-stars. The chemistry between the two stars was apparent on and off the set and Lombard made frequent visits to the set which were disruptive; she was eventually barred from the set. Many people believe these suspicions eventually lead to Lombard’s death, when she rushed back to Hollywood, during a War Bond drive and her plane crashed. Robert Kallock designed the gowns for the film. But, male stars often resented their wardrobe being designed by the same designers because they felt too much focus was placed on the dresses. Gile Steel, who was known for designing for men, was often teamed with other, more well known designers. He was nominated and won several Oscars for Costume Design, but always shared them with the designers who designed the women’s clothes.
