All of this was with Greer Garson in mind, who was coming off a run of five academy award nominations for Best Actress (she would receive her sixth, for this film). Set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1873 about young humble Irish house maid who makes good in the big house on the hill and marries the son of her employer, the owner of the local steel mill. Problems occur when the Irish workers threaten to strike. Many critics felt the studio was doing Greer Garson’s talents a great injustice by constantly casting her in righteous character roles, but the public, and especially the women who had been left at home during WWII, loved her and her portrayals of willful, strong and good women and the film was one of the most popular films in 1945. Irene costume designer got to put the character through rags to riches (this being one of the rags), but her costumes always maintained a more down to earth sensibility compared to other women in the household- as be-fitting Greer Garson’s character. This costume was originally used in a scene that was cut from later video releases, but it appears in numerous photos and on the video cover. Peaker was known for her charming giggle. On Broadway she performed in “Barefoot in the Park and “Bye Bye Birdie,” before hitting Hollywood and performing on numerous television commercials. Director Gene Kelly originally wanted Sandy Duncan to play the role of the hat maker’s assistant Minnie Faye, but was turned down after a screen test. In later life, Peaker was known with working with the homeless by making clothing available to them. The costumes created by costumer designer, Irene Sharaff, were a homage to classic Hollywood design and construction. Many of the costumes were designed for dancing, so they needed to “perform” and keep their shape and this was built into the costumes. This costume actually has two skirts, one meant for walking and one for dancing. Irene Sharaff was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on the film. Additional Notes Musical actor, Michael Crawford began his singing career as boy soprano in England. In 1967, he was noticed by gene Kelly when he was performing on Broadway and wanted him to audition for the part of Cornelius Hackle in “Hello Dolly.” Crawford had never danced before, but Kelly liked the clumsy physical quality to the dance steps, even though he would need to learn how to dance. Producers wanted to dub Crawford’s high singing voice, but Gene Kelly fought to keep it. His iconic portrayal of the young innocent clerk looking for an adventure and love became such an iconic performance that a scene from his musical number “It Only Takes a Moment” was years later used in Pixar’s “Wall-E.” “Hello Dolly” was one of the most expensive musicals ever made at a time when the elaborate Hollywood musicals were ending. The film was not released for two years after its completion. Crawford’s career was in a slump and he worked as an office clerk. He returned to England and eventually worked in successful stage productions as “Barnum" and “Starlight.” But his career would forever be changed when in 1984, he met Andrew Lloyd Webber. Musical history was made and he received an Oliver and Tony Award for his creation of the “Phantom of the Opera.” Costume designer, Irene Sharaff created true to period men’s costumes for the film with the shirt jackets and high-waisted pants. This look was intended to make the character somewhat awkward and is worn for a good portion of the film, it being his only going to town suit. Sharaff was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for her work on the film. Sizing: 33"(bust) x 22" (waist) x 34" (Hips) Additional Notes Marianne McAndrew was an aspiring actress pounding the streets of New York when the opportunity came up to audition for her first film role of Irene Malloy in the “Hello Dolly.” She was 25 years old (the same age as Streisand) and was tall, slender and had a turn of the century aristocratic beauty. Not being a singer or dancer, it was a surprise when she was cast for the role beating out Ann-Margaret who was considered too sensual and contemporary for the role. She was coached on her dancing and she sang to a dubbed soundtrack. There was high anticipation for a bright film career, but it never really developed. Hello Dolly was based on the 1938 Thornton Wilder’s farce “The Merchant of Yonkers” which he later renamed “The Matchmaker” in 1955. It opened on Broadway in 1964 and became one of Broadway’s most iconic musicals. Director Gene Kelly wanted Mc Andrews for the role of the charming owner of the hat shop who sparks a romance with Michael Crawford (Cornelius Hackl) and who would later become famous for Broadway’s “The Phantom of the Opera.” Film and stage costume designer, Irene Sharaff, was a master at using bright colors and designs in the turn of the century based costumes. This costume is a beautifully crafted taffeta gown with ribbon work becoming the pattern for the skirt and the multi-tiered sleeves. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on the film. She had recently received an Academy Nomination for “Gaslight,” when she took on the role of the saloon singer in love with the same man as Judy Garland in the Wild West musical extravaganza “The Harvey Girls.” Although she was a fine singer herself – a fact that would later show itself in future films and Broadway shows- her voice was dubbed by Virginia Rees. Helen Rose designed the costumes for the musical and perfectly crafted the theme of the film, the simplified idea of good girls vs. bad girls, into this costume. It is ornamented with beaded spider webs on the bodice and lower skirt and in the web on the skirt are beaded butterflies. But in the end, as in all proper MGM musicals of the time, she does relent and release Garland to seek her true love. The dress was later worn in “It’s A Dog’s Life,” 1955 and “Cimarron,” 1960. Additional Notes Joan Bennett, younger sister of Constance Bennett had three phases to her long career. The first being a golden-haired porcelain doll usually playing the innocent ingénue, the second as the sensuous brunette femme fatale and finally as a warmhearted wife and mother figure. Later in her career, she again came to prominence when she stared in the TV vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows.” Due to a gun shooting incident of her agent, she was virtually blacklisted, blaming her for the scandal. Humphrey Bogart, who stars in the film pleaded with the studio to keep her in the comedic film which is about three escaped prisoner who get involved in the lives of the local shop keepers of a French colonial town. The movie would turn out to be the last film she would act in. Mary Grant began her career as a Broadway costumer designer, but when she went to Hollywood she met and married actor Vincent Price and remained. Unusual for a woman costume designer, she preferred dressing men in a heightened contemporary reality. Time Period Time period in which Film set 1890 Additional Notes Ann-Margret, a Swedish American singer and dancer was a stunning actress who always seemed to bounce back and forth from a sweet all-American to the sex kitten. In this historical comedy, which is a spoof of any number of Foreign Legion desert pictures, she plays the adoptive mother of “identical twins” Michael York and Marty Feldman using her wiles and sexuality to search out the stolen family sapphire. May Routh created colorful period costumes for the satirical comedic romp through the desert. Ms. Routh gave some insight on how costumes are designed. The turquoise gown was created because she discovered just over a yard of the eye-lash fabric and knew she wanted to use it because of its color and texture. The entire ensemble was created around that piece of fabric. Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
