Additional Notes
It is almost a crime that Mae West does not get the recognition she deserves as a leading figure in the development of Hollywood and especially for pushing the boundaries in representing women in film. She was an independent woman who made her screen debut at age 40 and had total artist control of her career (which was unheard of at the time), wrote thirteen of her films, often had a say in the co-stars and directors, became the highest paid star in Hollywood, was largely responsible for saving Paramount Studios from bankruptcy and in 1940 her name was entered in the dictionary.
She had refined her character which was mostly based on the perpetuation of her sexual image and her ability to write comedic lines with double entendres that would drive the censors crazy but clever enough to get around them. She was often attacked by religious organizations and politicians as being a threat to the youth with her “obscene, indecent, immoral, and impure drama.” But, for the most part, the public loved her. After temporarily leaving films she continued to tour in plays, night club acts and record albums.
When it came to her fashion, Mae West was extremely specific and very controlling. She knew exactly what her image was and what worked for her. She often paid for and kept most of her wardrobe and because of that fact, she took incredibly good care of it. She often stated that her clothes should be tight enough to show she is a woman and yet loose enough to show she’s a lady. Her clothes, headdresses and shoes were also creatively constructed compensate for her slightly rounded 5’2” frame. No photographs were released without the approval of Mae West (and usually with the editing to reduce her figure).
She also never stopped working or making appearances, which may have contributed to the downfall of her image. She never gave up her sexual outrageous character even at an age where she probably should have. She was a complex, mysterious woman who was nothing like her public persona in real life. Much has been written about her and the complexities of this woman who was way ahead of her time and refused to assimilate into the time she was in.

Garment was worn in the Limehouse Blue dance number. Anna Mae Wong was the first Chinese American to become an international celebrity, appearing in over fifty films and spanning the time period from the silent to talkies. She did this through an extremely racist time when Asians were cast in mainly servants, prostitutes and secondary roles. Due to the codes of the time, an Asian woman was forbidden the kiss a Caucasian man and so any storyline would prohibit that relationship, especially one that ended out well. But, due to her talent and determination, she was able to achieve international recognition and in 1934 (at 5'4" tall) was named as one of the best dressed women of the time. Most Asian women's parts in a leading role were played by white actors and this was evident in 1937 when she was rejected for the female in "The Good Earth" because she did not fit into the Caucasian image of what Asian women looked like. This continued through the 1940's.

Additional Notes
The costume was later worn by an extra in "To Catch A Thief"
“The Scarlet Empress” was a direct competition with MGM’s vehicle for Greta Garbo “Queen Christina.” The film, with its dark expressionistic sets and grotesque gargoyles, reflected an impression of the 18th century Russian world, which the 1934 world knew very little about. It is beautiful, erotic and violent- released just as the Hays code was being imposed and director Josef von Sternberg ‘visual style’ and dramatic lighting often makes cinematic poetry.
Travis Banton, who began his career in couture houses of New York, eventually became the head designer at Paramount and dressed the studio’s most illustrious stars, most notably Marlene Dietrich. He often said that the costumes for The Scarlet Empress were the most pleasurable to designs of his career. He was aware that his costumes would be compared to “Queen Christina” and tried to stay true to his own vision, but similarities are obvious. The response to the film, by depression weary audiences, was less than favorable but was later embraced by “camp” seeking audiences of the 1960s.

Pieces were purchased as part of a lot buy. They were unidentified. Dickey originally had a label, which must have fallen off that read "Loretta Young." It matches the embroidery on the cuffs so was thought to go with the costume. The dickey and cuffs may not be original to costume.
Exhibition Notes / Requirements
Note originally the ruffle had a bias label reading “Loretta Young” the label has since fallen off and has been lost.

Additional Notes
Katharine Hepburn was an actress of film, stage and television who was comfortable in all genres. She was cast in “A Woman Rebels” in 1937, a Victorian era drama where Hepburn's character fights against convention and defies the restrictive and often hypocritical conventions of the time by refusing to get married and wanting to be her own person. This attitude surfaced in her personal life as well where she was an outspoken and non-conforming woman. Her relationship with the press was a contentious one but, she still managed to become one of Hollywood Greatest Female Stars, a title awarded to her by the American Film Institute in 1999. She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress twelve times and held that record until surpassed by Meryl Streep year later.
Walter Plunkett, for the most part, restricted his work to period films but, he found the industry difficult to work in where everyone had a say in how the costumes should look from the producer, director and the star. He had pretty much given up Hollywood and returned to New York to design evening wear, when Katharine Hepburn insisted that he design costumes for some of her upcoming films. He returned and remained in Hollywood, eventually designing the wardrobe for “Gone With The Wind.” This set his reputation for being the outstanding authority on period costumes.

Additional Notes
Claudette Colbert was not new to working with DeMille in historical epics having just filmed “The Sign of The Cross” 1932. She was known for her incredible body and had very specific ideas of how the sexually-suggestive costumes should look as she played the manipulative, wily seductress. She insisted that her bosom be exposed as much as possible and that little or nothing was between the costume and her body. Colbert rejected the costumes that DeMille’s staff had created for her, so Travis Banton stepped in. The battles continued and costumes were being produced from day to day to satisfy the star. But, the final results were beautiful and the film went on to become one of Paramount’s highest grossing film of the year.
Travis Banton was already the chief of wardrobe at Paramount and knew how to handle difficult stars, but this one was to become one of his most difficult challenges. His designs for the film were a testament to the Deco period- all the rage at the time- and had little to do with actual Egyptian clothing. But, the look became the standard for how the costumes of Egypt would be depicted for many years. The Hays code, which restricted how much of the body could be exposed, had just taken effect, so Banton was able to get away using more risqué images than he would be able to in later productions
This costume is worn in the scene when the character of Cleopatra is unrolled from the rug. It is little more than pieces of fabric stretched over her breasts and when she falls out of the rug, she is obviously about to fall out of the costume. There is a quick cut, and she is again appropriately covered.

The gown was purchased from Eastern Embroidery Company formerly Getson's Embroidery. The company was responsible for many of the beaded gowns produced in Hollywood. Sometime in the late 40's to 50's, Travis Banton left the costume at establishment but never picked it up. Mary took over the establishment and sometime around 2000, Annie purchased the company. The dress was located in a box, wrapped in paper for over 60 years. Unsigned invoice dated 8/12/03 describing transaction

Additional Notes
Carole Lombard, the famously foul-mouthed actress, was definitely Hollywood Royalty and the fact that she married the King of Hollywood, Clarke Gable in 1939, set that title in stone. She was also known as the “Queen of Screwball Comedies” having gained early comedic training as one of the Max Sennett Bathing Beauties. Lombard was perfect in the role of Irene, a spoiled and zany heiress who finds a “forgotten man” for a charity scavenger hunt and hires him as her butler. The sophisticated and clever film was a box office hit and her performance is considered by many as her finest performance. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role of a naïve girl who becomes a woman after falling in love with Godfrey.
Travis Banton, who was synonymous with the style of the 1930’s, created slinky and glamorous creations using the finest fabrics for the socialite character of Irene. They perfectly symbolized the contrasts with the “haves” and the Depression-era “have not’s” and it is a moment of comedic karma when the character is pushed into a trash heap wearing this crystal gown.

Additional Notes
There seems to be some controversy on what the problem was between Claudette Colbert and the costumes designed for the film “Cleopatra,” but there are enough reports that indicate that things did not go well. Cecil B. De Mille, who directed the film and had his own staff at Paramount, had costumes made for Colbert but, as shooting began, she refused to wear them. Travis Banton, who was the head costume designer at Paramount was called in to design a whole new wardrobe to appease the actress. Colbert was known for her incredible body, but she also had very specific ideas on what her flaws were. She requested that Banton expose as much of her chest as possible to detract from what she felt was her thick waist and short neck. It is reported that after rejecting many of his initial designs, she pricked her finger and “x’d” out the designs with her own blood and said that she would cut her wrists if any more bad designs came through. But, working day and night, Banton did come up with designs that appeased the star and costumes were being created overnight for the scenes the next day. Very dramatic stuff and probably the story has been elaborated on over the years.
The designs that were created by Banton played more of an homage to the Deco period of the thirties than they did to the actual historical costumes of Egyptian times, but to a large extent, these looks have created an image in the minds of people of what they must have looked like. No undergarments or underpinnings were created and the usually bias cut creations clung to Colbert’s body and left nothing to the imagination.

Additional Notes
Katherine DeMille was adopted by legendary director Cecil B. DeMille when she was nine years old. She chose to be an actress and was usually cast in supporting roles, playing disgruntled exotic villainesses. She declined her father's offers for acting roles, instead preferring to prove her worth in the industry and did quite well for herself in films without her father’s influence. However, it was reported that the role in the Crusades was a Christmas gift given to her by her father. The film was a big old-fashioned, highly romanticized religious-historical epic based on the Holy Wars. Because the film bore very little resemblance to historic fact, the critics were critical of the film, but because DeMille’s superb ability to create spectacle, the film was a financial success due to its sheer entertainment.
Travis Banton gave a nod to the period of The Crusades in his women’s costumes for the film. But they also were firmly based in the bias creations of the 1930’s. He created lavish costumes for the role of Princess Alice, dressing her mostly in black or dark colors to contrast her against Loretta Young who was dressed in white. As was the practice of the studios, the costume was later altered and worn by an extra in the film “A Connecticut Yankee,” 1949 and later by Mildred Natwick in “The Court Jester,” 1956.

Additional Notes
This garment is frequently referred to as the Faberge gown and was a highlight at the Hollywood Costume exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under the coordination of Diana Vreeland. In her introduction to the book on this magnificent exhibit, Ms. Vreeland speaks of the creation stating: "When I think of detail, I think of Travis Banton's marvelous beaded dress for Marlene Dietrich in Angel- like a million grains of golden caviar. That is one of the most beautiful dresses ever." After "Angel" the dress was later reworked for Mary Astor, "Midnight," Paramount, 1939; Rose Hobart "A Night at Earl Carroll's," Paramount, 1940; Felicia Atkins, "The Errand Boy," Paramount, 1961; Fashion Model, "A New Kind of Love," Paramount, 1952; Barbara Hershey, "My Wicked Wicked Ways," CBS Television, 1985 and was used in Diana Vreeland Exhibit "Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design" 1975.
Marlene Dietrich was Paramount’s counterpoint to MGM’s Greta Garbo, both of whom were exotic foreign women. Some argue that, where as Garbo was more classically beautiful, Dietrich was a far better actress because of acting range. Dietrich is reported to have known film making from the inside and out and had a unique insight into lighting, costume design, camera work and most importantly, knew exactly what worked for her. “Angel” was Dietrich’s final film under her contract for Paramount and it was yet another in a string of privileged women who have an affair.
Travis Banton, who was chief costume designer at Paramount at the time, had a very close working with Dietrich and he created the most expensive costume he would ever design for the opera sequences in the film. Dietrich, who had the ability to acquire most of her costumes, wanted to keep the ensemble but, the studio refused and used it in multiple later films.

Additional Notes
Garbo had left Hollywood and returned to Sweden when she was coaxed back to play the role of the sometimes cross-dressing queen of Sweden and Adrian created magnificent and masculine raiment’s for his favorite star. Garbo had wanted to include more about the bisexuality of Queen Christina, but because of the codes of the time, much of that story line was cut from the film. But, when watching the film, Garbo and Adrian do manage to get some of her original intent into the film. The superb court gown, which is more like a suit of armor, displays this quality and there is little doubt that “something” is going on with her hand maiden.
A young Laurence Olivier was originally cast in the role of the Queen’s supposed “love interest” in the film, but Garbo had approval over casting, so she insisted that her old acting partner John Gilbert be given the role. Gilbert’s career had been suffering because of the addition of sound and his high voice and over the top acting style. There is no doubt that his film would probably have been improved with the addition of Laurence Olivier.
This gown, however beautiful, was a production nightmare. Garbo complained that the gown gave her a headache because of its weight (approx. 60 lbs.) and heat. The light that was reflected from the embroidery caused problems with the lighting and the sound of the gown dragging across the floor made it impossible for anyone to speak while Garbo walked. The studio, no doubt complained because of the cost. But it was for Garbo.
The fashions created for Queen Christian created a sensation at the time and were toured as part of the promotion for the film. Garbo did a large number of “fashion publicity stills” in the majority of the costumes in the film, except for the court gown, which again, may have been for her dislike of the gown.
It was rented by Mrs. Wilson Jones around 1935 and appeared at costume party with Star Edmund Lowe at the Coconut Grove in Hollywood at charity event given by The Twenty Little Working Girls. Photo appeared in January 1935 edition of Hollywood magazine, Photoplay.

Exhibition Notes / Requirements
Base fabric was originally a fine silk velvet but was splitting because of the weight of the beading. It was replaced with a heavier velvet for an exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum before purchased.
There are rumors that there is a section of the hem of the skirt that was left out of this re-construction, but it has not been verified or found.
