Additional Notes Meg Foster was basically hired for the character of Evil-Lyn, the “Hench-woman” to Skeletor, because of her piercing blue eyes and she based her character on Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth. Her corroboration with Frank Langella in developing their characters, certainly enhanced the film with her subtext of a perceived relationship with Skeletor, who eventually spurns her. In the end, she abandons him to meet his fate. This depth of character development made her and Skeletor the most compelling characters in the comic book movie. Costume designer, Julie Weiss, designed her costume, creating a beautiful, armored, caped warrior and it was instrumental in helping the actress create her character. It was so cumbersome and restrictive, she was forced to move in a certain way. All of Ms. Foster's hair was pulled back into the silver skull cap, bringing all the attention for her face and eyes. He was to be an old-fashioned guy. An ambassador of everything good who saves the day. His lack of acting skills were mostly panned by the critics, but they might have also contributed to the down to earth performance versus the hammed-up performance that other actors might have given. His athleticism made his wielding of the Sword of Grayskull seem graceful. There was some concern if he could carry the film with his heavy Swedish accent that made him hard to understand. There were attempts to do a voice overs of the character but Lundgren was determined to make it work. The impressive set of Castle Grayskull, was specifically design to accommodate the climatic battle between Skeletor and He-Man, with the characters jumping to different levels of the set. But the production was shut down before the scene was shot. The cast and crew were allowed to come use the set for a few hours but without lighting, so only a few single back lights were used making it impossible to see the expensive set. Costume designer, Julie Weiss, had mostly done contemporary costumes, so the film was a challenge. Even though the costumes had to be based on the action figures, Weiss was given some freedom to change the designs. To capitalize on Dolph Lundgren’s physique and to stay true to the toy character, he ran around in nothing more than leather bikini briefs, a harness and cape. Langella filled the character of all the bravado of Shakespearean villain with more depth than one would expect under layers of bad prosthetics. Langella has stated that the part was one of his favorite rolls he has ever played. With his performance and that of his second in command, Evil-Lynn, played by Meg Foster, they ended up becoming the most compelling characters in the show. The film had been conceived and largely financed by Mattel Toys in conjunction with Cannon Films. It was considered a ‘slam dunk because Masters of the Universe toy line had made over four hundred million dollars in the previous year. During production however, the toy line profits were plummeting, and Cannon films was on the verge of bankruptcy due to their over ambitions number of films in production. Both needed a hit. Even though the film was panned by most critics when the film came out, it did eventually gain a cult status. Years later costume designer, Julie Weiss, was surprise that anyone would take the time to save costumes from the film and hoped she would not be remembered for having designed the film. She had fascination stories of uncertain budges for the film and the poor actors who played the Troopers and Warlords who were constantly passing out in a heat wave in the desert where many of the battle scenes were shot. In the years since, she has come to realize the historical importance of the pieces and is grateful they've been preserved.
