She eventually landed a contract at MGM and they created a genre that perfectly matched her athleticism and her beauty. A special pool measuring 90-foot square and 20-foot deep was built on stage 30 at MGM and some of the most spectacular water spectaculars ever filmed were shot there featuring “America’s Mermaid.” The influence her bathing suits made to the swimsuit industry was enormous and Esther Williams even had her own line of bathing suits. Many of the bathing suits were not expected to spend hours in a pool and survive and the spectacular entrances of her rising out of water, looking beautiful and dry, were filmed with her entering the water and then run backwards. She is most remembered for her partnering with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. After Hollywood musicals fell out of favor with the public, Charisse retired from dancing but continued to act in films, television and stage through the 1990’s. The CinemaScope musical was based on the successful Broadway musical by Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe which deals with two Americans that stumble upon a Scottish village that appears for one day every one hundred years. But this does not stop Gene Kelley from falling in love with one of the village’s lasses and dancing his heart out. But, in this film, at age 12, she played the part of a young girl determined to live out her dreams of winning the Grand National Steeplechase. She learned how to ride a horse and after an accident had back problems and addictions to pain killers that would plague her for the rest of her life. Critics and audiences fell in love the young girl who became known as “one shot Liz” because of her ability to do a scene in one take and she was signed to a long time contract with MGM. She would perform through her adolescence, teenage years and adulthood in films produced by the studio and would become considered one of the most beautiful women alive. Costumer supervisor at MGM, Irene [Gibbons], dressed the young actress in simple English schoolgirl/ farm girl clothes of the 1920 and later in equestrian wear. She would continue designing for film at MGM until 1962, when she threw herself out of a window at the Knickerbocker Hotel. Even more famous than her film costume designs were her extremely successful up-scale tailored clothing lines from her own fashion house. Additional Notes Italian-born brunette, Marisa Pavan was the twin sister of actress Pier Angeli. She was small and demure and usually was cast in gentle roles. In the opulent 16th century costume drama “Diane,” however, she held her own as the scheming Catherine de Medici who finally meets her match with Lana Turner in her affections for Roger Moore. Walter Plunkett stated in an interview before his death that he realized that he would always be remembered for designing “Gone With The Wind,” which is not a bad credit to have under your belt. But, designing for “Diane” was far more fun. He was able to stay with one time period and create different themes on the period without “going through a war.” So much embellishment was used on the opulent costumes, a manufacture of jewelry was purchased, just to create the ornamentations. The costumes for the role of Catherine de Medici were constructed before the designer had actually seen the actress. When he saw her and realized how small she was, he considered remaking the costumes because they were too heavy for her to carry off. Marisa Pavan informed him that she was a girl from a small village in Italy and these costumes were a fantasy come true and she would make them work. She will probably be most remembered for her portrayal as Endora in the Television series “Bewitched,” but her depth and career goes much deeper. HTWWW was one of MGM’s last epic films and was the last film shot in Cinerama. It was a family saga set between 1839 and 1889 and dealing with the Westward expansion. Moorehead’s character of a pioneer wife and mother meets her end in the first forty minutes of the film when the family’s raft overturns in the rapids. Moorehead was not impressed with her shabby period costumes which covered her from head to toe and felt that all that was required for her role was to strike a few poses, serve breakfast and drown. It was a massive project for designer Walter Plunket, who had to provide costumes for a huge cast of principal actor, cameo roles and thousands of extra and on top of that to cover a time period of fifty years. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Color in 1964 for his work on the film.
