Additional Notes
Darling Lili was nominated for Best Costumes in 1969.
The assassinations of the Kennedys, Martin Luther King Jr., The Vietnam war, the peace movement, the Civil Rights Movement and the sexual revolution was making it hard for audiences to relate to the sugary sweet image of Mary Poppins star Julie Andrews. Her future husband, Blake Edwards wanted to change that image by directing her in a vehicle that would star her as a spy for Germany during WWI. The production was to include only a few musical numbers, but the studio wanted to cash in on Andrew’s singing ability. The combination met with mixed reviews as the public started to change their ideas about Hollywood musicals.
Designer Donald Brooks was a prominent figure in American fashion but, who’s passion was for the Broadway stage. He had designed costume for Julie Andrews for the huge costume musical “Star” in 1968 and was nominated for an Academy Award for costume design for his work on both films. Cloaks were designed for many of the evening ensembles for the film, but they are usually only seen as the character enters a room.
