Norma Shearer as Marie Antoinette in 'Marie Antoinette' Designed by Gilbert Adrian

Custom-made head piece worn by Ms. Shearer as Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France. The elaborate bird cage is constructed of metal in the shape of a loving cup and heavily ornamented with paste diamonds. A stuffed finch rests on a perch inside the cage. An attached mechanism, when triggered, allows the bird to turn its head and open and close its beak.

Two versions of this headdress were made. One of a light pipe cleaner type material that she wore in her head and this version which was used for the close-up, when she pulls a ribbon turning on the mechanism that makes the bird move it's beak and turn it's head.
