Costume for Lady in Waiting to the Empress Cixi consisting of an ivory silk under robe, wide pleated skirt, collar woven in silver threads with flowers and Indian motif leaves; inner robe of aqua green silk, ivory collar couched in gold and silver threads with flowers and leaves; the outer robe of copper colored silk, ivory embroidered silk collar detailed with floral and figural vignettes on an embroidered gold fretwork background, wide sleeve bands of burgundy silk couched in gold with emblems and scrolls; antique red silk pleated belt embroidered in blue and gold with flowers, suspending a shaped apron panel of ivory silk with a butterfly and silk tassels; hair piece of wire mesh and what is believed to be human hair, centered in the forehead with a phoenix bird with spread wings suspending tassels to the sides, turquoise stone inset pendants in front, the long tail feathers of the bird extended upward across a coiled bun arranged in six loops and held in place by thick gilt metal pins ending in black glass beads; two antique embroidered blue silk long tassels hanging in back.

Costume worn by one of the two attendant women to the Empress Cixi in the throne room as she speaks to little Puyi when he arrives at the Forbidden City. The two ladies stand in attendance to the Empresses left, and one is also shown gazing at Puyi as he hides, at first, behind a pillar. James Acheson received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his work on this film.
