Jennifer Jones plays an old stern school teacher who is hospitalized because a growth on her spine. In the first of a series of flash backs of her life set around 1900, she wears the school girl uniform, when the character returns from college full of hope and possibilities. But, after the death of her father, she is forced to reject a proposal for marriage and world travel to teach in her hometown to pay off her father’s debts. As the community and her past pupils learn of her threatening condition, they rally behind the Terrible Miss Dove and review how she changed their lives.

The costume designer, Mary Wills, who was noted for her authentic-looking period costumes, designed the turn of the century school girl uniform. She was nominated seven times for an Academy Award for Best Costume design and won the award for her work on “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm in 1962.
