Additional Notes

Angela Lansbury loved both script and the role that he was hired to play of the deft, daffy and tipsy authoress, Salome Otterbourne. Angela Lansbury had just returned from performing several Tony winning roles on Broadway and admits that her acting style was overdrawn, full of vigor and energy. But this style fit in perfectly with the rest of the top-tier actors who had a tendency to “chew up the scenery.” The costume was worn in various scenes including the Tango number with David Niven and ultimately in the scene where the character meets her demise.

Costume designer Anthony Powell paid impressive attention to detail in creating the looks of the murder mystery taking place on a boat on the Nile in the 1930’s. His designs for the character of Salome were “fantastically glamorous costumes, heavily embellished and with lots of jewelry.” Many of the pieces were created in England and the Unites States, many of them re-made from vintage costumes. His costumes for the film were some of the most successful costumes he created for film and he received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, 1978 for his work.
