Additional Notes

Donfeld was nominated for Best Costume Design in 1970 for his work on this film. As of 2002, this film holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations without a nomination for Best Picture: 9.

Jane Fonda was an unusual choice for the cynical off-putting character involved in a depression-era dance marathon but, her performance invokes sympathy for the bitter hopeless character. It was perhaps her first great role and it changed her career. She was nominated for Best Actress, 1970 for her work in the film.

Costume designer, Donfeld’s custom-made costumes for the principal actors artfully created the look of the Depression era film. The outfit, which looks like the character might have made herself, is quite beautiful with its subtle color and texture choices.
