Additional Notes

Dutch actress and singer, Carice van Houten had a successful career in the Netherlands before she was cast in “Valkyrie.” She is probably most known for her portrayal of Melisandre in the Television Series "Game of Thrones.”

The 2008 American-German thriller revolved around the real life failed Operation Valkyrie to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Tom Cruise specifically requested van Houten to play the part of the Nina von Stauffenberg, the wife of ring leader of the operation. When the plot fails and it is obvious of the ramifications, Nina says goodbye to her husband and leaves the country with her children in a scene where this costume is featured.

English costume designer, Joanna Johnston, beautifully crafted historically correct costumes for the film. Although the majority of the costumes in the film are German officer uniforms, she perfectly captured the infamous characters and distinguished the looks by using subtle shades and textures. To contrast Nina von Stauffenberg’s costumes against a field of greys and browns, Johnston created romantic, stylish and romantic costumes in rich colors. The detailing of the back of the suit is particularly beautiful and was created to be shown walking away to the car that would transport her out of Germany.
